Below are a few tips and tricks we've put together for general care of your jewelry as well as on how to restore shine back to your fav and most worn pieces.
As a general rule, jewelry should be the last thing you put on in the morning, and the first thing you take off at night.
How to care for your jewelry?
Think of your HoU jewelry as the finishing touch to your look. In order to keep your favorite pieces looking as fresh and good as new,
- Avoid wearing in oceans, pools and baths. The chemical and salts can wear down the plating
- Avoid direct contact with cleaning agents, perfumes, oils, and beauty products - they contain harmful alcohol derivatives
- Always remove jewelry prior to showering, playing sports, washing your hands, or swimming
- Avoid popular jewelry cleaners. They, too, rub off the plating
How to store your jewelry?
Store in original packaging when you're not wearing your jewelry. Our packaging boxes come with the anti-tarnish strip (tiny black square) provided inside our Haus of Urbi jewelry pouch and boxes.
Your HoU jewels are made to be treasured, so here are our top tips on how you can keep them looking brand new...
- If you store your jewelry outside of our boxes, we highly recommend making sure you have those black squares wherever you store your jewels!
- Try and keep your jewelry items separate so they don’t scratch other pieces in your collection!
How to clean your jewelry?
Gently clean your pieces once a year with the provided polishing cloth. Do not over polish, as that rubs off plating!
Metal Info and Care Tips
- Gold Vermeil offers the look of solid gold at a more accessible price point, with better durability than standard gold-plated jewelry. It is more durable than standard plating due to its thicker gold layer and sterling silver core. However, it can still wear down over time, especially with frequent exposure to water, sweat, or friction. It may tarnish or fade gradually, but proper care can extend its life and luster.
- Sterling Silver is a precious metal known for its beauty, though it’s softer than gold-filled and can scratch more easily if not handled with care. Sterling silver naturally tarnishes due to exposure to air, moisture, and chemicals—even high-end pieces. Interestingly, wearing your jewelry often can help prevent tarnish, as natural skin oils provide a protective barrier.
- Gold Filled jewelry is limited in how it can be shaped or worked with. Because of this, we’re only using gold-filled chains for permanent jewelry. Gold-filled jewelry must legally contain 5% gold by weight which gives it a higher value and better durability. The bonding process also makes it tarnish and chip-resistant.
-
Solid Gold is gold through and through—making it a timeless, durable, and valuable option for everyday wear. 10K, 14K and 18K gold are more durable due to their higher alloy content, but it can still scratch with daily wear. It doesn't tarnish easily, but exposure to chemicals and buildup of oils or dirt can dull its shine over time.
